This week’s theme for Cee’s Black and White Challenge is ‘sculptures, statues and carvings’. From The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City:

So many kinds of trees, so many choices this week. I like to draw trees so that’s not a hardship. Finally, though, I decided to draw a very famous tree: The Lone Cypress that perches on the cliff at Pebble Beach Golf Course on the Monterey Coast of California. The tree is the emblem of the club.
I visited the club in 2014 and had a glimpse of the famous (and now protected) tree. Here is my lone cypress:

Oh, how I struggled with this one. The sky is so much easier to paint. I drew and discarded three versions. Finally I went through my sketchbooks and found this older drawing. Staring up at the sky as if you were laying in tall grass:
