Subterranean

The sky opens, bestowing on the parched earth, rain
With eyes toward heaven, stretch arms wide and spin
Quenching such a desperate thirst for happiness
But the splashing becomes a stirring up of dust
When the water evaporates
Beneath the heat of his disdain
The dragnet drags through the ash
And frisson dissolves
In a whirlpool of despair
Those highs are so heavenly
But the lows are positively subterranean
Go ahead give me a little shove
I’m already on the precipice
I did the math:
Seven seconds of absolute euphoria
Then nothing
There’s no Wonderland
At the bottom of the hole

    1. This woke me up at 3 am and for once I got up and wrote it all down. The time it takes for a body to fall 600 feet is 7 seconds. I did work it out through equation. My frisson from yesterday was evaporated by subsequent events. And thus the high became very low. Wonderland? That is all your doing. I’m not sure you wanted to know all that, but there you go…

  1. I’ll be honest…it was difficult for me to read. The quality, of course, is outstanding; but it pulls at me in a very familiar and scary way…

    Well written, my friend.

    1. Thank you Pearl! There’s a variety of writing styles on this blog – it has a bit of an identity crisis! Just kidding! I write a bit of everything so as to sharpen all my skills. Thanks to Roger indeed for introducing us!

      1. My husband dislikes some television programs because “…the stories are all exactly the same, only the names are different.” As much as I have always enjoyed poetry, my favourite books of have always included those which vary in theme and portray each one of those themes in different styles of verse.

That is precisely why I fell in love with Roger’s work, and now yours, and one or two others!

    1. Peter, are you telling me I’m full of shit? 😱😂 But seriously, thank you for your confidence that I could write myself a wonderland. I’d prefer it to the alternative!

  2. Very poignant. This took me back to some dark times in my life.

    I’ve been there unfortunately.

    1. I zoom and crash sometimes. Fortunately I level out in between those times and spend most of the time in that state. Thank you although I’m sorry you can relate- I wouldn’t wish the darkness on anyone.
