Week 6 in the Year of Drinking Adventurously!
The Far East is not being well represented so far! This week is another fail, I’m afraid. The beverage to sample this week was supposed to be Huangjiu, which translates to ‘yellow wine’ or ‘yellow liquor’ but really isn’t quite either one. Like Japanese sake, it’s a unique thing of its own. Which I hope to try someday, maybe when I get back to San Fransisco for a visit. I think I should be able to get back on track next week.
So, since I can’t tell you about Huangjiu, I’ve decided to torture you with the beer brewing adventure instead! The first batch -a Belgian blonde ale- is kegged and ready for consumption. Most brewers name their beers so this one is called: Blondes Prefer Gentlemen. The next batch is an English Ale so I want to name it Naughty Princess Meg! (Not that I’m a princess or anything…) Here’s what it looks like:
I’m not really going to torture you with the process. You’ll need more than my blog to figure out how to brew your own beer. Anyway, once it’s all cooked up, it goes into a fermenter, which is nothing more than a glorified 5-gallon bucket with a valve in the lid to release the air bubbles created by the yeast “burping” out CO2. Next, it gets transferred to a glass “carboy” for secondary fermentation and to let the dissolved particulates settle to the bottom.
The first Sunday in February is a time of great rejoicing or great sorrow, depending on which football team wins. It is also a great time of feasting and merrymaking. At the party we attended, most of the gathered crowd cheered for the Broncos who eventually prevailed. When your team isn’t playing (we’re in Philadelphia Eagles territory), the party is more about the food and drink.
One of my few domestic skills is baking. Not desserts, cakes, pies and the like… No, I bake bread: Italian loaves, French baguettes, brioche, challah, cinnamon bread, English muffins, AND pizza and stromboli! And yo, it’s Philly, so the native dish here is the cheese steak. The cheese steak Stromboli (actually 2 of them) I took to the party was filled with a grilled New York strip steak, sauteed peppers and onions, and mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Served with my own marinara, it was wiped out in minutes!
Anyway, that was my Superbowl weekend. I hope you all enjoyed yours! Weekend, that is, I know not everyone was glued to the fiasco that passes for the National Championship. Back to drinking adventurously next week!
I’ve always wanted to make my own beer and I’ve never got round to it. You’ve inspired me to try and get round to it! 🙂
Hope you’re well!

You should try it! It’s not that hard. You bake, you can brew. It’s a matter of keeping track of the time and the temperature for the brew. If you can handle that, you can do it! And yes, doing well! Hope you are too!

Nothing like a good brew… 🙂

Ohhhh, you make beer and bake breads. I wish we lived closer. You sound like someone I want to hang out with on the regular. And eat/drink all of your stuff:)

It’s the one domestic talent I have! I’m not great at the other stuff. My husband says his biography could be titled “My Life in Dog Hair” so… But if you’re ever in the area, let me know!

Hahaha that’s a good biography title though. Mine would be something similar – just cat’s though 🙂 I will definitely let you know! Mmm bread

Is it wrong that I want your cheese steak Stromboli for breakfast?
I do not like beer but I dated a guy who brewed his own and I thought the process was fascinating. But he liked beer a little too much. Haha!

I’ve been known to eat those leftovers for breakfast! Yeah, you can’t be obsessed with it. My husband tends to be full throttle ahead with his hobbies so the whole beer thing is all he’s talking about right now! Ugh! I’m sticking my nose into it because I do like beer and if I want any of his attention… 😀

John’s (husband) favorite breakfast is left over pizza… so we’re all on the same page. 🙂

You know I don’t like beer, but I think choosing the names would be a blast! Your stromboli looks great! I had no idea you had domestic skills other than being a goddess, of course 😉

Hahahaha! My domestic skills are indeed limited! But I think I’ve found my niche! The beer naming is going to be the fun part of it! 🙂

My dream job would have been (and maybe still is!) naming the OPI nail polish colors… 😉

Oh yeah!!! That would be a cool job!

Wow! Making beer too? You have a lot of time!

The actual “work” only takes 2-3 hours. The rest of the time is spent waiting!

I may look into making my own wine.

Chateau Taylor, a flavorful little wine, with subtle undertones of wit and sarcasm. Nutty yet mischievous. Let me know if you want help with your ad campaign!

Brewing is so much fun. And I LOVE the name! Hubby calls his little brewery “8-bit Brews” since he is an IT engineer. He recently put down an Oktoberfest lager and it’s awesome!
We’re looking forward to brewing a jasmine and lavender mead together here soon.
Loving this blog! Can’t wait to read more!

Wow! I would totally love to hear how the mead turns out! That’s really cool. I hate to say I’m probably loving the idea of naming the brews as much as I am brewing. 8-bit brews is a great name! I’m so glad you like the blog, I have a lot of fun with it!

I’m hoping to do it this summer. We want to find a good, local supplier of honey that’s not going to kill our budget.
And he’s got 2 more beers he wants to put down first.
Add that to the diet of which we are not allowed to drink beer – or alcohol of any kind – and that he makes 3-5 gallons of brew each time… it might be a while.

That was a win all around as far as I’m concerned. Beer AND Stromboli! Yum, yum, yum. I’ll be there in a few minutes!

I went to school with a kid who made his own vodka. He drank a bottle of it and went temporarily blind. Beer looks nice, though. And your cheese steak thing looks lovely!

He’s lucky it was only temporary. You can blow yourself up pretty easily trying to home distill. That’s craziness! Yeah the beer turned out good! The Stromboli too!

He’s a policeman now!
The Stromboli looked incredible.

Nothing like having a good home brew while watching those multimillion dollar beer commercials. I had an Irish Red and an English Brown for the event – sorry no fancy names, but the beer was tasty.

Thanks for the stromboli. That sobered me up a bit!

Ah, it’s the perfect food for when you imbibe. A good combination of fat, protein and carbohydrate to soak up the alcohol! 🙂
