The ache was deep, the chasm wide
A heart left battered, a trust betrayed
And hidden away, locked inside
A broken woman, a soul afraid
And she bravely carries on
Every night a dreamless sleep
A blackness, sweet oblivion
But every sower has to reap
A painful restitution
Her resolution falters
Drowning, gasping, clawing to the surface
Treading dark water, staying afloat
Not so easy when you think you’re worthless
So much simpler to just let go
Lost to attrition
A spark of hope, a love unexpected
Tenderness, a healing balm
Gently loved, caressed, protected
Quiet the voices, issue the calm
Blessed redemption
To take the tentative step to trust again
To give her heart and take one in return
To share a life, to risk the pain
Of a love as intense as a fire that burns
She is salvage
Gorgeous. I love it!

Beautiful. Difficult to take those first steps to love and trust again. A powerful and perfect finale to this piece. Describing your heroine as salvage was genius. With one words you said so much. Great work, Meg. This was an awesome write.

When I started reading, I wondered why the title ‘Salvage’ when I read the ending, I knew why!
That one was an empowering read! Thank you, Meg!

Thank you! I was alluding to it a little with the drowning, water reference. Salvage in the maritime context. I know that’s about as clear as mud! 😉

Trusting again may be the bravest, most difficult thing to do. Beautifully written, Meg!

Thank you! It is difficult. I’m not sure you ever fully recover, you just do the best you can.

I think that we all have hearts that are scarred. It’s inevitable, but we go on.

I went on a little trip down memory lane after your post yesterday – see what happens? 😉 I rarely write sad stuff!

Well, was it the trip down memory lane, or the Rodan Red – or both?

Maybe a little of both!

Trust is hard enough to give…but to give it again after losing it is a lot harder. Lovely piece

Delicious! Not get into it again with the brightest of hope and trust after a huge let-down is courageous. Never easy. Well written.

This is beautiful, Meg. Loved this line:

I suppose this is appropriate in the context of what we’re writing. My subconscious mind? It’s not what I was thinking about when I wrote it.

I didn’t necessarily think you were. This is beautifully written. It evokes emotion, thought, discouragement and hope. I felt many of those same things. It turned out OK.

Thank you. I’ve (obviously) been there too. I have yet to be completely broken, maybe a little dented!
