Don’t get discouraged…

Writing can be a blessing and a curse. If you’ve been at this a while, you know what I mean. Sometimes things go very well. Creativity is sparkling, words are flowing, the keys of the keyboard tap out a furious staccato. The finished work is brilliant – some of the best stuff you’ve ever written. You edit carefully, then send it out into the world, on your blog, into a self-published book on Amazon, or in a query to an agent. You wait for the response.

And nothing….

You get a few likes on your blog, maybe a couple lukewarm comments. Your book languishes, sales are weak, nonexistent even. The agents are silent, or worse, dismissive… “Thank you but your work isn’t a good fit for me. Good luck in your journey…”

If you are expecting the usual litany of “think positive”clichés, sorry! You know how I hate that crap! Nevertheless, how do you keep from going under in the floodwaters of writing and publishing?

Remember why you started writing in the first place.  Even if your goal is to make a living at this endeavor, your most basic reason for writing has to be because you love it.  You have a song to sing, a story to tell, a cause to champion, and so forth.  We all want to be appreciated, have readers enjoy what we write.   But it is a rare thing to achieve overnight success.

Our world has trained us to expect instant gratification.  If we can’t have “it” right now, something is wrong.  Writers need to have vision – a long view.  Ok, here’s a cliche but an appropriate one:  it’s a marathon, not a sprint.  A marathon requires setting a pace, having time goals for the splits of the race, refueling at appropriate opportunities… You know what I’m saying?  Yes, some faster runners will blow by you. But here’s the cool thing about marathon running:  most runners race to achieve a personal best.  That’s why thousands of slow runners sign up to participate in marathons.  The goal is completion, not winning.  So to carry the metaphor back to writing, success can’t be tied to sales, reviews, likes and comments.  Success is tied to your personal best.  And like a runner who keeps training, you only get better the more you run.

Don’t let your desire for validation derail your dreams.  Whatever you write, for whomever you write, on whatever medium you write, remember that you love to write.  And that alone makes it worth it.

More than words

Yesterday, my friend Whitney who blogs about the huge renovation she and her husband are doing to their house, posted some before and after photos.  She’s been blogging since August and I commented on how much had changed in that time.  She responded by asking me if I knew how many words I’d written in that same period of time.   Whitney and I met right at the beginning of both of our journeys. Honestly, I’ve never thought about it but she made me curious and reflective.

I started this blog very tentatively back in 2014.  I posted a non-fiction piece about a trip to Ireland.  I repeated a story a tour guide had told me about fairy trees.  There’s just something about that place.  It inspires the poet and the dreamer for sure.

Next, I wrote and posted three fairy tales set in the far, hazy past.  Then nothing for a while — months, in fact.  But then at the end of June 2015, I published my first novel.  It was time to get serious.  This blog was to be my author platform, my doorway into a community of other creators and poets and dreamers.

Since August 2015, I have written Second Chances (working title), the fourth book in my novel series at 91,853 words and started the fifth, which has a few chapters complete totaling 6,058 words.   I’ve also written a ten part series called Diary of a New Writer which totals 8,118 words.  My ongoing fictional piece Here Lies a Soldier has run up to 7,368 words so far.   My short stories based on songs add up to another 13,451 words.  The Year of Drinking Adventurously has yielded another 4,150 words.  And all the other blog posts, poems, limericks and so forth add up to 27,314 words.  For a grand total of 158,312 words in 7 months time.

Does that seem like a lot?  It isn’t really.  On average it works out to 754 words a day.  For those of you who have participated in NaNoWriMo, you’d need more than twice that many words per day to complete the challenge.  Obviously, I’m not trying to keep to a schedule as rigorous as that, but I am trying to be a consistent and productive writer.  I return once again to the important role that discipline plays in successful writing.  Without going back into exhaustive detail about it, I’ll just say that having a schedule –one that is practical and fits into your life comfortably, is key.  When you figure out that schedule, stick to it.

I love to write, it brings me a lot of joy. But it’s more than words.  I would go so far as to say that it’s been therapeutic.  There are things I can write about in fiction that I’d be reluctant to talk about otherwise.  And this community I’ve found?  Absolutely priceless.  I love you guys!

Romancing the barrel

Week 9 in The Year of Drinking Adventurously.  Bourbon barrel aged beer.

Despite the growing craft beer movement, the beer industry is still dominated by large industrial brewers like Anheuser Busch.  So chances are, unless you are a beer afficionado, you aren’t likely to have tried a bourbon-barrel aged beer.  Just like it sounds, a batch of beer is stored for a period of time -aging- in a bourbon barrel for a number of weeks.  It gives the brew a distinctive flavor.  And really, it’s quite the practical reuse of something that would otherwise be discarded.

Yep, that’s right.  Bourbon producers only use a barrel once.  That seems like such a waste!  No worries, though, the rest of the whisky producing world is happy to take America’s bourbon barrels off her hands.  Canada, Ireland, Scotland… they all use old bourbon barrels to store and age their whiskies.  And of course, another one of the uses for a pre-owned bourbon barrel is aging beer.  Even small-time microbreweries are acquiring old barrels for this purpose.

I chose to drink Allagash Brewery’s Curieux. IMG_1272And what a sexy brew it is!  (Thus the ‘romance’ in the title.)  It’s corked – champagne style.  At eleven percent alcohol. it’s another butt-kicker, so be forewarned.  Curieux is made by aging Allagash’s Belgian Tripel in Jim Beam barrels for eight weeks.  At that time a splash of fresh tripel is added before kegging or bottling the batch.  The end result?  Hints of vanilla, coconut and bourbon…  Yum!  And wait till you hear this –the recommended food pairing is cheesecake, roquefort or creme brulee!!  I think it’s really funny that beer has gotten snobby enough for food pairing! (snort!)

Ok, so I’m sipping on it, as I write this.  The flavors are subtle.  Not strongly of any one thing.  Not real beer-like either.  Highly carbonated but without a lot of head.  Crisp and… woo! going straight to my head!  Bring on the creme brulee…
