Monday Morning Coffee

Today marks two weeks to go until the sale of the house. We fly out the very next day. As you might imagine, my time has been filled with tasks related to the move. Since no writing whatsoever has been getting done, I haven’t been posting much either. But if we were to sit down and have a cup of coffee together and you asked me what was happening in my life, this is what I’d tell you:

  • We moved my mother to a very nice senior citizen residence in late May. I’m still running back and forth delivering items she left behind and organizing her place. Fortunately, she seems to really like it and is making friends. It’s a funny thing though… she realizes her age being around other older folks. She said she’s going to get old now that she’s with them instead of with us.
  • Older people leave a debris field in their wake. When mom left her part of the house it still looked occupied. I’ve been purging and cleaning all the stuff she left behind. I’m taking the last load to the thrift store today.
  • Meanwhile, my own stuff is nearly packed. All that’s left is the kitchen gear that I will use until the end and our personal items like clothes, etc.
  • Our shipping crate should arrive this week. When we fill it and send it on its way, it will take 6-8 weeks to arrive at our door in Ireland. One of my packed bags for the plane will carry a minimum of daily life essentials like a small pan, a small pot and a couple kitchen utensils. Can’t be eating at the pub every night!
  • We aren’t taking any furniture with us. The biggest items going along are my easel and my grandmother’s hope chest. That chest came with her when she immigrated to America from Scotland in 1921. Now it’s going back across the Atlantic with me almost 100 years later.
  • Now the really difficult part has started. We’ve been getting together with all our good friends to say goodbye. These are friends that have become our family for the last 26 years of living in Bucks County. Fortunately, many of them are enthusiastic travelers so we expect lots of visitors. Even so, saying goodbye is never easy. I’m feeling the weight of it.
  • Among all the chaos, we remain excited and anticipatory for this move. It’s an adventure, a fresh start and a brand new book waiting to be written.

  4. I’m glad you’re trying to maintain such a great attitude. I know your mom will miss you being there for you but she will adjust and have more activity than before, I’d guess. I understand the getting older thing-my mom insisted on coloring her hair until the end because she didn’t want to look like the “old” people around her in assisted living. You definitely deserve this chance at adventure and an exciting life change! Enjoy every minute and get that guest room ready for your visitors.

    1. Thanks, Dee! I think she will adjust. As long as she keeps in touch with her ‘gang’ and has people with youthful attitudes to talk to! Yes, we feel like this is the opportunity of a lifetime – too good to pass up. I’m really very happy about the move just stressed over the details! We’ll get through! 😃

  6. Meg, I’m excited for you that the house is selling and you’ve found one-overseas. I hope you love it! I loved that you were Keri g grandmas hope chest safe w/ you. I have this from my grandma and quite love it. Plus, has an 100 Year Warranty. I think it’s still good until 2030 or so lol. Hope Moving is smooth, I know it can be stressful.

    1. Thanks so much! I wouldn’t part with it. I think my Nana would get a real kick out of it traveling back overseas almost to ‘home’! We’re a bit stressed but excited as well. 😅

  8. Wow, the big day is almost here. How exciting for you. Sounds like your mom is adjusting well to the new circumstances. Will she be able to travel to visit you?

    Very cool about the hope chest “going home”!

    1. Yes, getting close! Every day is nearly full with some task. Mom should be able to visit us as long as she doesn’t wit too long. her health is good and she’s pretty spry right now but she is 87 so things could change quickly! I’m hoping maybe in the late fall. fingers crossed!

  10. So exciting! But it is always bittersweet to leave a home and friends. I love that all of us who read your blog don’t have to say goodbye. It’s one of the best things about this age of technology. Safe travels and I look forward to reading you from across the pond!

  11. Enjoyed your blog. I remember the difficult period of placing my mother in assisted living and moving. Things do get easier. And how exciting! Moving to new places gives us new friends and new ideas for writing!
