Procreate and the Apple Pencil

I recently upgraded my iPad and treated myself to the Pro with the Apple Pencil. I have never tried doing any sort of digital art but on the recommendation of another artist friend, I thought I’d try. So much fun! The app I bought for drawing is called Procreate and it lets you simulate a whole bunch of media: painting with different brushes, drawing with a range of pencils and ink, calligraphy, and technical pencils, pastels, charcoal and crayon even. If any of you has the iPad Pro and pencil, give this program a try. It’s 9.99 in the App Store and worth every penny. I will not be hanging up my sketchbook or canvases any time soon but this is a really fun alternative. Here is my first digital drawing – a tree!

    1. Thanks, Darnell! It definitely has a learning curve. But I feel like it’s not too far off from my pencil drawing of a tree so that is encouraging. Plus with digital stuff you don’t have lot of physical art work piling up. Especially if its not so great!!! 🤣

    1. No but they have a feature where you can upload a photo and use it as a guide. I think that’s how it works anyway… then you can ‘trace’ the photo! Thanks Peter!

  1. That’s really good Meg, I like the style and the texture in the trawing – I use Gimp a bit and I get really annoyed that a matte finish is hard to a achieve.

  2. Good start, so there’s three of us traditionalists being dragged into this century now at the same time.

As you say, it’s not going to replace the joy of the tactility of analogue art but it’s got it’s benefits.

My two year old still-unopened gouache paints may stay unopened for a little while longer unfortunately.

Today’s discovery – you can do a playback of your drawing as a video. A word of warning, I was horrified at the realisation I’d spent an hour fudging around proportions 😟

    1. Wow! That’s pretty crazy. My video will be ‘erase, erase, erase….’ 😜 I can see this being a fun distraction. Plus all my erasing can make a mess of paper but not so with the digital. I can’t wait to try the painting features!
