The Year Of Drawing Adventurously – Week (37) Fantasy

Following the chart to 52 drawings this year.

The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a mythical creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and sometimes an eagle’s talons as its front feet. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of birds by the Middle Ages the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Since classical antiquity, Griffins were known for guarding treasure and priceless possessions.*

Here is my fantastical gryphon:

    1. I have considered it. That’s how this all started: I wrote a middle grade science fiction story and tried drawing (badly) some of the characters from it. They were terrible but I decided to keep practicing! Thank you so much, Holly!

      1. It needs to be expanded, for one thing. It’s only 6,000 words. It should be in the 20,000 range for middle schoolers. Ah, if I get stuck on the war story maybe I’ll dust it off and have a look! 😜

  1. This is truly excellent. Great texture in the feathers, shading and contrast, and showing the mythological characters roundness and dimensial shape. Really love it! Awesome job.

  2. This is simply awesome Meg! The creature is magnificent, frightening and beautiful all at the same time. I can very well imagine this griffin guarding a treasure and i for one wouldn’t want to go anywhere near him, treasure or no treasure!
