Monochrome Monday – Black and White Photography (25)

Since Cee is taking a break from sponsoring the Black and White Challenge, I was left to my own devices this week. Along my daily walk/jog route, there is a electrical substation from which big power lines branch off in several directions. On the right kind of day, they are actually quite picturesque in a modern/industrial sort of way. Here are my power lines:

  3. The skies looked ominous. Something serious about black and white photography that color doesn’t quite have. The same for film. Working with shadows and light is truly an art form. Well done!

  4. I’ve always loved artistic representations of power lines/telephone poles and other things that aren’t typically thought of as pretty. They have a good structure, adding an interesting grid to artwork–like in Edward Hopper’s paintings of town scenes–and point to humankind’s alteration, for good and bad, of the natural landscape.

    1. I agree! I like the work of Imogen Cunningham – she features structures like oil refinery tanks and water towers in her work. Not ‘pretty’ but interesting especially in black and white and from unusual perspectives. Thanks, Rebecca!
