Painting (9) Moonlit Path

This is one of those paintings that started out being one thing and finished as something else. It’s really just a practice piece for painting the lights and shadows that are created with a single light source in an otherwise dark landscape. Another better version is in the works…

  1. This reminds me of a painting in oils where the start point was all black then white was added and mixed on the canvas for grey shading, with the white areas being scraped back to bare canvas. For the life of me I cannot remember what or who!
    Anyway, I like it!

    1. Aha! Do you know who Bob Ross is? THe Joy of Painting was a show that ran on American TV in the 1980’s and early 90’s. He did a painting like that. And … I’ve followed that tutorial for another painting!

  2. This is pretty good already. Curious to see the next version. I really have problems with defining were the light is coming from. Should work on that.but this forest scene is already pretty beautiful 😊

  3. This reminds me so much of going down a country road late at night. There are no colors, just trees, and bush beside you. If you’re lucky you have a moon to light you’re way, but your primary concern is getting inside before some rather large mosquitoes eat you alive. There’s is no color at all. Just varying shades of black, and those ever-present bugs. What you painted was a memory from my teens that I had forgotten. I can’t be certain but I think you even painted the potholes in the dirt road which loved to turn ankles.

    1. Oh, that is a lovely comment, Tom! Thank you (sorry for the mosquitoes….) but anything that evokes a memory so vividly is certainly the best compliment an artist can have! Hope you are feeling better?

      1. I hear you! I should be writing… I have two lengthy projects in the works and instead I can’t keep my hands off the art supplies! (Great fun, though!) 😃
