This week’s theme for Cee’s Black and White Challenge is Objects or People Older than 50 years.
This Grandmother’s clock was made in the Berlin, Germany and brought to the United States in the 1960’s. My Dad acquired it from an antique dealer right after that. The date on the plate inside reads 1841!
Before electricity came to the coal mines in the 1920’s and 1930’s, miners used oil lamps like this one to light their way:
……and is that a candle snuffer behind the lamp?

Thank you! Yes black and white photography does have more atmosphere than color. 😉

That oil lamp is cool. I’ve seen those around here a lot too, being a coal state and all. That’s one dangerous job.

It sure is. I was born and raised in northeastern Pennsylvania- that’s coal country too. At least it was until the Knox mine disaster of the 1930’s which flooded all the mines and left the area without an industry!

It’s still big business here, in the eastern part of the state. Mostly strip mining now, but still plenty of underground work as well. That’s a hard life doing that kinda work. And it’s awful for the environment. I wish Wind, hydro, and solar would replace some of it. Too much money in DC from coal companies though.

It should die a natural death, right? As these new technologies become cheaper and more sustainable. But yeah not with this administration… 😏

Nope. Too busy lining their pockets. Besides, the miners are just another group they consider expendable drains on the “system”. These fuckers are gonna pay come mid-terms. And I can’t wait to see it happen.

I think you’re right. It’s going to be a tsunami!

The beauty of the first photo is not that it is black and white, I think it is the angle you chose to use. It gives the old clock a different perspective.

Thanks, Drew. I wanted to get as much of the clock in as possible without standing far away. 🙂

I love grandfather clocks. We don’t really have a spot for one — wish I did!
