Every night I drift to sleep
As darkness makes me blind
And yet my vision attenuates
With my sharply focused mind
I travel over a thousand miles
To a hostile, forbidding land
The witching hours drag so slowly
Moon lights the evil plan
The hungry mouths, the feral eyes
So dreadful is their gaze
Circle round with deadly purpose
Muscles tighten and I brace
They are confident that I am caught
But I’ve yet to meet my end
With guile and cunning, I make my move
On this my life depends
When I have dodged and feinted
I smell their fetid breath
As I flee into the forest
I escape those jaws of death
It’s only upon awakening
Chilled, yet dripping wet
That I realize the nightmare beasts
Haven’t killed me yet
Creepy! But I love it! I’m sorry if you really suffer from recurring nightmares… I do sometimes, too. It’s no joke.

Thanks, Mari. I do once in a while. Not always the same subject matter. But I’m sorry to hear you have trouble with them. It is no joke. 😦

I picture trying to outrun werewolves. At which point I’d be screwed… because I am not a very fast runner. I can speed on the highway like a champ, though. 🙂

Ooh, yeah. I’m screwed, too. Good thing dream stuff doesn’t borrow too closely from reality. It’s not always wolves, but when I dream about being chased, I’m always “this close” to being caught when I wake up. 😦

It reminds me of those tee-shirts I’ve seen… “If you see me running, you should run, too, because I’m probably being chased” or something like that… Not that I’d actually get away… so you’d better pass me! 😀

Or just trip the other guy in self preservation! Lol!

Ahahaha… I’ve always told my husband that when the zombies come, throw me to them as a distraction so he can take the kids and run.

Oh come on, now! There has to be a nasty neighbor you can sacrifice to the horde! 😀

Most of my neighbors are nasty. Weird coincidence — our neighbors t the left are older… they have 2 sons who went to school with my husband… and one of them was his bully!

Oh, trip them! Lol! That’s awful (no it’s not)! Karma!

Sometimes, if they’re not around, my husband snow-blows the snow into their yard… LOL

This sounds like a nightmare that I’ve had one too many times.

So glad you liked it! I enjoy writing some dark and scary stuff once in a while. And I’ve always been fascinated with the places your mind goes in dreamland. Thanks, again!

I am sorry to hear about the nightmares, but I do love the darkness in the imagery of this piece! I have them frequently too, and the things coming after me are usually bugs. I probably should have dreamt of zombies after watching GOT last night!

Thank you! They don’t plague me all that often, but once in a while…. Whew. And I enjoy doing something dark once in a while. 😀

Wow. I love the way you ended this. Allie suffers from powerful nightmares that often wake me up in the middle of the night.

Ooh, I’m sorry to hear that. It’s no joke to wake up from terrors in the night. They don’t happen to me very often, thankfully. Appreciate your comment!

I’m so behind, don’t know how I missed this. It’s great, nightmares are always awful, aren’t they. I rarely have one, but it’s always the same when I do. Driving along the coast and the road goes downhill and is covered by water with no warning. Sometimes the car goes through the water, sometimes I wake up. Boy, where’s there a dream analyzer when you need one?

Oh that’s a bad one! That feeling of helplessness, and knowing what you need to do to save yourself and not doing it. Yes, I’d love to find out what some of our dreams mean!

I would, too! And if I have a nightmare it usually involves bridges and water…
