Something so sweet…

Recently, I had one of those days. There was no special significance to that day but I found myself missing my father so badly.

My father was a lawyer. He practiced estate and family law. The good kind of family law: adoptions, wills and trusts. The kind of law that takes care of people, doesn’t tear them apart.

Tonight, I met someone who was helped by my father. A man, who with his wife, adopted a baby boy 30 years ago. The man was so grateful for my father’s help, he named his baby boy for him!  The coincidences that led me to meeting this man are too convoluted to relate, but the fact that we crossed paths is truly amazing.

My father has a namesake. It is not my child – I have no children. And yet, my heart is so touched right now. I feel like I’ve been given a little gift. Knowing how much he meant to someone- to name their child for him.  It’s something so sweet.

  1. that is such a beautiful article in memory of your father… I wonder how it feels to not be able to hug him anymore. it terrifies the hell out of me. Fathers are special figures in every kid’s life.

  2. Wow – that is amazing and such a lovely gesture. Isn’t it wonderful knowing your father had such a positive impact on others? That’s wonderful.

I, too, have days when I miss my dad for no specific reason. He was a physician and whenever I visit Mom and we go anywhere in town, inevitably someone who was a patient of his recognizes my mom (or me – I look like him) and tells us how much they miss him.

    1. The boy is a grown man now! This adoption happened 30 years ago! This was the first I’d heard of it, though. The chances of my meeting this couple are unbelievable! Friend of a friend of a friend kind of thing but when we got to talking and they found out where I was from… Anyway crazy cool stuff!

  3. What a wonderful thing to find out Meg! I’d like to think your Dad engineered that meeting to tell you he knew you were missing him and to let you know he was still with you – in ways you didn’t even know!
As you know, I’m just starting my journey of missing my parents. Since they both passed right before the holidays, they got a bunch of Christmas cards from people who hadn’t heard they had passed. Some of the names were vaguely familiar to me and my brother and sister, but we didn’t know if they were distant relatives, old neighbors or coworkers. I took some time to write all of them a letter explaining what happened. I was floored when letters and cards started coming in the mail. Not only offering condolences, but telling us how much they thought of our parents and telling us stories and memories. It was so sweet to know how much they were thought of, and like you, we felt we were being given a gift.
Thank you so much for sharing.

    1. Aw, that’s a great story, too! What a comfort it is to know how much they were appreciated and loved! There are going to be good days and bad days, and it really does get easier as time goes by. 😘

  4. Now, this is beautiful. I wish there is something more to describe the sweetness. There’s is nothing like being known for a good name. I had a close relationship with my dad and I miss him each day. What always makes me happy when I think of him is the remembrance that he was a very good man. I love this post Meg 🙂

  5. Wow! For someone to have that kind of an effect on another person, and for the person to actually reciprocate with such an amazing gesture. And for you to have met them also is great!
