Writers write, right?

I had a conversation with a friend tonight.  Someone who also wants to write.  Well, does write, she just hasn’t finished anything.  I sympathize.  There are times when, no matter how hard you try, the action in your story just comes to a screeching halt.  I’m actually at that point in my current project.  Seriously if I’ve managed a paragraph in the last 4 days, it’s probably an exaggeration.  But when I’ve struggled like this in the past, I’ve found a way to get through it.  Ready?  Write crap.  Yep.  Even if it totally sucks, doesn’t move your plot along, bogs your characters down… you get the idea, you’re still writing!  And that’s what writers do!  So go ahead, describe your characters grocery list, have them watch TV, make tea and read their own books.  It’ll get you to the next ‘thing’ and guess what?  You can go back and delete all the filler.  I promise, it works every time.  Because writers write!

  1. This also works with nonfiction. Just go online and find a hot topic on facebook and get the juices flowing by participating in that. Or blog about something and save it as a draft; then go back and delete it if you think it is utter tripe.

  2. Hello Dear Meg 🙂

Your article brought a big smile on my face. I loved reading this. You have so simply explained what is to be done. Writers write. This is going to stay with me forever. It might sound trivial to someone else or it might not. But as your words touched my heart they rang a bell. It’s an epiphany. I don’t know if it’s the right word as my vocabulary is not so good. 🙂

Writers write–good, bad, rubbish, masterpiece–all comes later. The first and foremost–they write 🙂

It’s the best and most profound writing advice I have received in so many words and so many times but yours is a touche.

    Loved it.

    Sincerely,
    Anand
